SHAH ALAM, July 19 — The strong unity among the diverse community in Selangor has been attributed as the primary foundation driving the state’s economic growth, ensuring its benefits are enjoyed by all layers of society.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this is especially thanks to the state’s policies promoting unity and harmony, including the Gagasan Rumpun Selangor grassroots initiative.

He described the programme as a key framework that strengthens unity and ensures the socio-economic development of Selangor’s residents.

“This project inspires a spirit of unity throughout the nation, fostering Malaysian nationalism. Just like a tree with many branches and shoots, we ultimately share the same roots and aspirations.

“Despite differences in skin colour, beliefs, and ideologies, success will surely follow if we align our objective on the common #KItaSelangor platform,” Amirudin said in a post on social media today.

Gagasan Rumpun Selangor is an initiative that aims to foster unity and celebrate diversity in the state.

The state government has allocated RM4.5 million to the campaign this year, reflecting Selangor’s commitment to social harmony and cultural inclusivity.

The initiative will be held in all nine districts in Selangor, with five having been concluded: Hulu Selangor, Hulu Langat, Sepang, Petaling, and Selayang.

The Menteri Besar described Selangor as Malaysia’s melting pot, boasting a more diverse population than any other state in the country.

“Migration from southern regions like Melaka and Johor, northern areas such as Perlis, Penang and Kedah, as well as large groups from Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak, have all contributed to Selangor’s expanding population.

“While this diversity adds immense value to the state, it must be bound by the principle of unity to ensure that Selangor’s wealth and resources are enjoyed together, without suspicion or conflict,” he said.

This underscores the crucial need for well-managed unity to ensure continued economic growth.

Amirudin’s statement comes just over two weeks after the Statistics Department released its report showing Selangor maintaining its position as the main contributor to the national economy, making up 25.9 per cent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product in 2023.

The RM406.1 billion contribution — the highest recorded in the country — is also the first time a state’s economic activity has exceeded RM400 billion.
