KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The federal government aims to increase job placements among Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) graduates by 80 per cent by 2030.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the bio-based and biotechnology industries, in particular, play a crucial role in enhancing interest in STEM, which he described as the foundation for the nation’s development and advancement of science, technology and innovation.

“I believe biotechnology and bio-based companies in Malaysia, particularly those with BioNexus status and under the Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) programme, will play important roles in providing practical training opportunities and industry knowledge to foster youth interest in the field,” he said.

Anwar said this during his speech at the launch of the National Bioeconomy Showcase at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur here today.

BioNexus is a special status awarded by the government to qualified companies undertaking biotechnology activities, and are eligible for fiscal incentives, funding and other guarantees to increase their growth.

The BBA programme, meanwhile, helps bio-based firms infuse science, technology, automation and strategic investment into business operations, while identifying and providing facilitation to overcome gaps in skills, technology adoption, financial resources, regulatory compliance and product marketability.

In his speech, Anwar said success is not guaranteed when relying solely on research conducted by foreign scholars, particularly from the west, citing Algerian philosopher Malek Bennabi.

The prime minister stressed the importance of cultivating local talent in the biotechnology industry.

“Success cannot be guaranteed without inner strength initiated by the locals, including indigenous science and efforts. This is our challenge today.

“While external support can help us achieve progress, it will not ensure long-term success and strength (as opposed to producing more local talents in the industry),” he said.

He urged relevant parties, particularly government agencies, to encourage and support initiatives to draw students to STEM fields, especially considering the current shortage of talent in these areas.

Anwar also announced the federal government will contribute RM2 million to companies participating in the BBA programme, which will play a significant role in providing internship placements and training for students.

The National Bioeconomy Showcase is held today and tomorrow, with the aim of exposing students to STEM fields and encouraging students to pursue careers in biotechnology.
