LARUT, July 11 — Up to 1,000 metric tonnes of fresh premium durian, especially of the Musang King variety, will be exported to China in October, Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said.

The durian will be exported through 52 processing and packaging centres owned by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry throughout the country, she added.

She said the export timeline depends on approval from China customs.

“The supply of premium durians are from farmers registered under the ministry, who have the Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices certification,” she said when met after an engagement session with producers of China-bound durian at the Federal Agricultural Marketing Agency (Fama) operations centre here today, with Fama chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli in attendance.

Aminuddin said the engagement session with 150 participants was to provide information on durian market trends and demand in China.

“It also provided detailed information on export procedures and protocols, including regulations and standards that require compliance,” he said, adding that he hopes the effort will not only strengthen the export supply chain, but also boost the efficiency of durian procurement from farms to the international market.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu previously signed a protocol on phytosanitary protocols for the export of fresh durian to China.

He was reported to have said on July 1 that his ministry was finalising the phytosanitary certification format with China for export approval.
