KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — The River of Life (RoL) project is 81 per cent complete, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said.
She said while the project is not complete, significant transformation has been seen along Sungai Klang and Sungai Gombak, which are now dynamic waterfront icons with substantial economic value, fulfilling the aspirations of the project.
“This progress is evident through numerous accolades received,” she said at the wind-up for the Auditor-General’s Report debate in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The report highlighted that despite the RM3.91 billion spent, the RM4.363 billion river rehabilitation project, the costliest ever undertaken in Malaysia in a complex urban area, might not be completed this year as scheduled.
The report said that as of July last year, eight RoL projects were in progress, with completion ranging from 21 to 97.3 per cent, and contractors have not been appointed for two projects after previous contractors were terminated, while another 12 projects are in the pre-implementation stage.
The audit revealed that only 79.4 per cent of river beautification is complete, and 50 out of 296 sewage treatment plants were rationalised or upgraded successfully.
