SHAH ALAM, July 7 — Age is not a deterrent for Datuk Abdul Majid Omar in continuing to pursue knowledge, for which he was recognised as Selangor's Tokoh Maal Hijrah for 1446H.
The 84-year-old, who recently completed his Doctor of Philosophy studies at Universiti Selangor (Unisel) in February, consistently adheres to the principle of "seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave."
Having served as the state deputy mufti for 17 years, from January 2, 1998, to December 31, 2015, he urged the younger generation to always be grateful and make the most of every opportunity and facility available to them in pursuing knowledge.
“Youths are at a disadvantage if they do not seek knowledge. Nowadays, our country offers numerous opportunities and facilities. Utilise every resource and do not waste them.
“Study until the end and not just up to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination certificate. Pursue any field you like, as long as you continue learning until the end,” Majid told SelangorKini.
The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj presented the award to Majid after he was announced as Tokoh Maal Hijrah Selangor 1446H.
The ceremony, part of the state-level Maal Hijrah eve celebration, was held at the Dewan Syarahan dan Muzakarah Islam Shah Alam in Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah yesterday night.
He took home a RM20,000 cash prize, a trophy, and a certificate of appreciation. Also present were Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and the state government leaders.
A native of Kuala Selangor, Majid began his career as a teacher in the 1960s and was named Tokoh Guru Kebangsaan in 2007.
A scholar and preacher, he has also been dedicated to the development of the Muslim ummah through his book writings and religious lectures at mosques and suraus, as well as on broadcast media stations.
