SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj took part in the Maal Hijrah eve celebration at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah yesterday night.

His Royal Highness, accompanied by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, was welcomed by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and the state executive councillor of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah.

Sultan Sharafuddin then led the supplication for the end and beginning of the year before performing the congregational Maghrib and Isyak prayers and listening to a sermon titled ‘Hijrah Itu Kemerdekaan’ delivered by Pahrol Mohamad Juoi.

The royal couple then proceeded to Dewan Syarahan and Muzakarah Islam Shah Alam to present the state-level Maal Hijrah Award and attend a banquet.

At the banquet, Selangor Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad declared Datuk Abdul Majid Omar as the state's Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1446H.

Majid, 84, served as the deputy state mufti for 17 years, from January 2, 1998, to December 31, 2015.

This year’s Maal Hijrah celebration theme is ‘Al-Falah Pemacu Malaysia Madani,’ which means welfare and success.

Al-Falah was chosen in conjunction with one of the phrases of the call to prayer, which means ‘come towards success (Al-Falah).’
