NIBONG TEBAL, July 6 — Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Abidin Ismail today won the Sungai Bakap by-election, defeating Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) candidate Joohari Ariffin by 4,267 votes.
Abidin obtained 14,489 ballots, while Joohari received 10,222.
The result was announced by returning officer Khairulnizam Hashim at the Jawi Multipurpose Hall vote counting centre here tonight.
The Election Commission said 63.24 per cent of the 39,279 voters in the state constituency cast their ballots today.
In last year’s Penang elections, Nor Zamri won the Sungai Bakap seat, which had been a Parti Keadilan Rakyat stronghold from 2008, defeating Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
The by-election was called after Nor Zamri’s death on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
