Sg Bakap vote count begins

NIBONG TEBAL, July 6 — Polling for the Sungai Bakap by-election has ended after nine polling centres officially closed at 6pm.

The voting centres were at SMK Tasek, SJKC Boon Beng, SMK Bandar Tasek Mutiara, SK Seri Tasek, SK Sungai Duri, SMK Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, SK Sungai Bakap, SK Jawi and SK Sungai Kechil.

All ballot boxes from the 65 voting streams have been transported to the tallying centre at Dewan Serbaguna Jawi near here.

As at 4pm, 57.7 per cent of the 39,151 registered voters had cast their ballots in the by-election.

In total, 39,279 registered electors were eligible to vote in the by-election, including 57 police personnel. There was no early voting as the cops opted for postal ballots.

The by-election is a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin and Nibong Tebal PAS vice-chief Abidin Ismail.

The seat fell vacant after the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff of PAS on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
