SHAH ALAM, July 4 — Selangor is now able to supply round-the-clock clean water thanks to a number of initiatives implemented by the state government.

These include increasing the state’s water reserve margin and reducing non-revenue water (NRW), Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said when tabling the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) mid-term review at the State Legislative Assembly here today.

Addressing the house, Amirudin said the state took the right approach in increasing its water reserve margin from 13.8 per cent in 2023 to 15.6 per cent by 2025.

Efforts include developing new water initiatives like the Sungai Rasau Water Supply Scheme.

He added that efforts to reduce NRW are meant to lessen instances of burst pipes in Selangor and replace old pipes, hence reducing the number of public complaints concerning water disruptions.

“As a result of these initiatives and ongoing efforts, the state government has successfully achieved the target of 24-hour clean water availability,” he said.

On waste management and recycling, Amirudin acknowledged it is a challenging task for the Selangor government, especially in reducing the prevalence of illegal waste disposal and increasing the recycling rate.

“Selangor achieved a waste recycling rate of 8.24 per cent in 2023, but to reach the target of 15 per cent, joint efforts are needed, especially within the community.

“To achieve this, all local councils in Selangor have introduced waste recycling programmes or facilities in their districts to promote higher recycling rates.

“Meanwhile, to reduce waste sent to landfills and improve waste management, the state government is implementing significant initiatives such as establishing waste-to-energy plants and developing a material recovery and collection facility (MRCF),” he said.

He also highlighted the state government’s plan to build the Sultan Idris Shah Green Energy Plant and Selangor Recycle Surge recycling facility to expedite the MRCF’s efforts.

Separately, Amirudin said the state has demonstrated commendable efforts to preserve permanent forest reserves in Selangor, in line with its aspiration to be a low-carbon state.

“The recently gazetted Selangor Royal Heritage Forest and Central Forest Spine Selangor underscore Selangor’s dedication to maintaining its 31.7 per cent forest reserve coverage.”

Amiruddin said these efforts are part of RS-1’s third strategic theme of driving environmental sustainability, which comprises 39 key performance indicators, of which eight have been implemented and the remaining 31 are in various stages of implementation.
