SHAH ALAM, July 4 — The Selangor government has set its target for its contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP) at 27 per cent, following the mid-term review of its five-year blueprint, the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

As part of the mid-term review, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said several important goals previously set will be studied again in light of the current situation, as well as with coordinated efforts from the federal and state administrations.

“As the federal government aims to also develop other states, this administration aims for Selangor to contribute 27 per cent to the country’s GDP with the complete implementation of the economic boosts outlined in the RS-1,” said Amirudin during the tabling of the RS-1 mid-term review at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

The Sungai Tua state assemblyman cited the latest figure announced by the Statistics Department (DOSM) on Tuesday, in which Selangor recorded an average GDP growth of 7.43 per cent from 2021 to 2023.

He said the figure exceeded the average GDP growth target of between 6.5 per cent and 7 per cent from 2021-2025, outlined in the first strategic theme of the RS-1.

“This achievement demonstrates Selangor’s capacity to promote sustainable and effective economic growth within the state.

“In this context, this strategic theme plays a crucial role in supporting the achievement of the state’s strategic economic goals, ensuring every step and initiative taken aligns with positive and sustainable growth,” he said.

Amirudin said the state government recorded an average investment value of RM39.4 billion in key complex sectors from 2021 to 2023, which surpassed the average annual investment value target of between RM23 billion and RM35 billion.

“This success demonstrates the state government’s commitment to promoting sustainable and effective economic development, as well as strengthening Selangor’s position as a major investment hub in the region,” he said.

The RS-1 contains four strategic themes, five policy catalysts, and 262 initiatives that include 20 game-changer projects.

The four strategic themes, which help frame the plan, focus on strengthening the economy, ensuring social inclusivity and people’s well-being, driving environmental sustainability, and providing good and effective governance.

Under the economic strategic theme, 93 projects, programmes, and initiatives were placed into nine focus sectors, and their implementation is measured by the achievement of four of the 16 macro indicators outlined in the five-year plan.

Of all the projects and initiatives, 18 or 19 per cent have been completed, while 75 or 81 per cent are still being implemented.

“This achievement indicates that more efforts are needed to improve the implementation of projects, programmes, and initiatives,” he said.

Amirudin said the economic strategic theme aims to stimulate sustainable economic development in Selangor through catalyst projects or change drivers, digitalisation initiatives, talent development, and technological advancement programmes.

“These game-changers focus on key and complex sectors, as well as the development of strategic regions to leverage Selangor’s competitive advantages, which will help create job opportunities and drive stronger economic activity, particularly in supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises,” he said.
