PETALING JAYA, June 26 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has earmarked over half a million ringgit for the Petaling Jaya Neighbourhood Security Team Programme (PKKPJ) this year.

Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the initiative, with an allocation of RM550,000, aims to empower the community, in line with the council’s vision of transforming Petaling Jaya into a smart, sustainable and resilient city by next year.

He said 142 applications have been approved, with RM3,000 given to each residents’ group to ensure the success of the programme.

“PKKPJ, which was first introduced in 2011, is an initiative under the Petaling Jaya Safety Master Plan.

“It is aimed at encouraging the involvement of residents’ associations, neighbourhood watch groups and village community management councils in neighbourhood security programmes,” he said.

He was met after a ceremony to present PKKPJ 2024 contributions to applicants at Dewan Banquet MBPJ here last night.

Zahri also presented the Best PKKPJ Reporting Award and RM1,000 cash incentives to five residents’ groups.

“This award was held for the first time to recognise associations active in security endeavours, such as patrolling their residential areas,” he said.

The award was won by the Ara Impian Residents’ Association, Jalan 14/1-14 Residents’ Association, PJS 1 South Avenue Residents’ Association, PJS 10 Taman Sri Subang Residents’ Association, and Desa Mentari Block 5 Neighbourhood Watch.

At the event, 11 residents’ groups were honoured for their outstanding initiatives that align with the Petaling Jaya Smart, Sustainable & Resilient (PJSSR) Blueprint 2030.

Zahri said evaluation considered community involvement in the implementation of environment-friendly initiatives, green practices and neighbourhood spirit in their respective areas.

“Eighty-eight communities were assessed through the PJSSR Community Database, but only 11 were selected as winners.

“We also assessed the involvement level of all community groups, including children, teenagers, youth, persons with disabilities and the elderly,” he said.

The PJS 1 South Avenue Residents’ Association bagged the top PJSSR 2030 Community Award, bringing home RM20,000 in cash and a trophy.

The Kampung Tunku SS 1 Residents’ Association won second place, while the Damansara Utama Residents’ Association and Homeowners came in third. They received RM15,000 and RM10,000 in cash prizes, respectively.

Eight other residents’ groups received RM5,000 each.
