SHAH ALAM, June 9 — The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is still continuing its efforts to extinguish the fires which affected eight of the 14 containers at West Port in Pulau Indah yesterday.
Berita Harian quoted its assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar as saying that five of the eight had been put out by 7.40am today. In total, six containers have been extinguished, including one yesterday.
"Currently, eight containers are still being extinguished with isolation work in progress. The team is using machinery assistance from the Petaling Jaya Fire and Rescue Station for the firefighting operation.
"We are now at the overhaul stage, and we expect the operation to extinguish the remaining burning containers to be completed by today afternoon," he said when contacted.
Mukhlis added that following investigations, it was revealed that the flames spread to the 14 containers due to several of them burning internally.
"Yesterday afternoon, the work to isolate the burning containers was carried out by the West Port authorities themselves, monitored by JBPM personnel," he said.
Previously, Selangor JBPM director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said the fire involving the containers, each measuring 12.1 metres, was brought under control at 2.39pm yesterday.
Initial investigations found that all the containers contained various items including paper, steel, pine wood, mineral materials, aluminium, and washing machines for laundromats.
"We received the call at 1.40pm, after which 24 personnel rushed to the location with seven assets, including Emergency Medical Rescue Services.
"All personnel were from the Pulau Indah, Port Klang, Sungai Pinang, Andalas, and Shah Alam fire stations. No casualties were reported," he said.
