SHAH ALAM, June 7 — Flood-prone areas within the Pelabuhan Klang state constituency are being closely monitored to ensure immediate assistance is provided to residents in the event of an emergency.
Its assemblyman, Azmizam Zaman Huri, however, said no flash flood incidents have been reported from June 4 until yesterday, despite an earlier forecast of a high tide phenomenon affecting Port Klang.
Azmizam identified Kampung Telok Gong, Kampung Pulau Indah, Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Taman Selat Selatan, Taman Selat Damai, and parts of Pandamaran Jaya as among the high-risk zones due to their proximity to the sea.
“These are among the coastal areas with high probability of flooding if there is a high tide, especially if it coincides with heavy rainfall,” he said when contacted yesterday.
“During high tide, floodgates are closed to prevent seawater from overflowing onto land. So, if it rains heavily and water cannot flow to the sea, the risk of flooding is high.”
Azmizam also advised residents to constantly monitor drainage and gutters around their homes to ensure no blockages that could cause flooding.
“Those who are renovating their homes should also ensure construction waste, especially sand, is disposed of properly as it can block drains.
“Residents are also advised to dispose of garbage properly to maintain smooth flow of water in the drainage system,” he said.
The National Hydrographic Center had previously warned that a high tide phenomenon could cause seawater to overflow into land areas in Port Klang, increasing the possibility of flooding.
Residents near coastal areas are advised to be vigilant, continuously monitor current weather conditions and refer to relevant agencies for safety information.
