KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — The autopsy on deceased mountaineer Zulkifli Yusof was completed on Monday and the body is at a mortuary in Alaska awaiting repatriation to Malaysia, said the Alpine Club Malaysia.
In a Facebook post today, the club said the repatriation of the body will be done in cooperation with an insurance company, a funeral management agent, the Consulate General in Los Angeles and representatives of the club.
“We have not received details about the flight to bring back the deceased’s remains.
“Before being brought back, the body will be bathed and shrouded by the Islamic Community Centre of Anchorage in Alaska,” the post said.
The club said climber Muhammad Illaham Ishak is being treated for frostbite at an Anchorage hospital, while another climber, Zainudin Lot, has been discharged and is helping send Zulkifli’s body home.
“We will share details of the flight to bring back the late Zulkifli’s remains once we receive confirmation from relevant parties,” the club said.
On June 1, the club said one of three Malaysian climbers, stranded at an altitude of over 6,000m on Mount Denali since May 28 while scaling the highest peak in North America, had died.
It said Zulkifli died at 6am on May 29 while sheltering in a snow cave known as the “Football Field”.
