Ulu Tiram police station attack: Suspect acted alone — Minister

JOHOR BAHRU, May 18 — The suspect killed in the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station yesterday was believed to have acted alone, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The 21-year-old local's action was not linked to a group, as the police initially concluded after interviewing 46 individuals to facilitate the investigation.

"At this preliminary stage, we found the suspect acted alone — we call it 'lone wolf' — he is (believed) driven by certain motivation as it was found that he does not mix with other people," he told a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) today.

Also present was Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

In the 2.45am attack yesterday, three were killed, namely policemen Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, and the perpetrator.

Another policeman, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, was also injured in the incident and is reported to be in stable condition at Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The suspect is believed to be a member of Jemaah Islamiyah, and an investigation at the suspect's house in Ulu Tiram led to the arrest of five members of his family, aged 19 to 62.

The police have obtained an order to remand the five family members for investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin said Azza Fahmi and Syafiq's remains will be taken to Masjid Tunku Laksamana Abdul Jalil at the Johor IPK for the funeral prayers and last respects.

Following this, the bodies of the two policemen will be taken to their hometowns in Bidor, Perak and Kuantan, Pahang, to be buried.

As for the family of the policeman injured in the attack, the minister said he would ensure that his family's would be looked into.

Earlier, Saifuddin visited the Ulu Tiram police station, where the attack occurred. Constable Mohd Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa, who was at the scene, told him what happened.

He also attended the funeral prayer for the two policemen killed in the attack.
