SHAH ALAM, May 18 — Newly-appointed Selangor Local Youth Movement (PeBS) members must avoid working in silos and learn to collaborate with their peers to ensure their efficacy in connecting with and leading the state’s youth, said state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said PeBS members carry the crucial responsibility of explaining the state administration’s initiatives and policies to youths, which aims to enhance awareness and understanding of these policies, and which in turn helps Selangor formulate better policies based on youths’ needs.

“PeBS is shouldering the responsibility of leading the youth today so they are aware of what the state has done.

“Similarly, we also hope that PeBS members provide a better perspective on the challenges faced by the youth today to the state so that we can better help them,” said Najwan.

He was speaking during PeBS’ 2024/2025 members' appointment ceremony at Dewan Jubli Perak in the State Secretariat Building yesterday.

Citing the recently concluded Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Najwan acknowledged that while the Unity Government coalition managed to secure higher votes in several districts, it failed to secure a majority among youth voters.

“Of course, when you are young, there is a tendency to be a rebel, to go against the establishment.

“We know this as we were in the Opposition before, but now we all must play a role in understanding these youths better and (to) help them,’’ he said.

Najwan also encouraged PeBS members to conduct political literacy programmes, emphasising the importance of understanding democracy and statehood in fostering the spirit of nationalism and patriotism.

Formerly known as the Local Youth Mobiliser (PeBT), PeBS was rebranded and reorganised in 2021. It provides local youth leaders a role in the development agenda of the young generation for each state constituency.

At the event, 208 out of 286 PeBS members were appointed, representing 12 zones demarcated, according to all the local authorities within Selangor.

Each PeBS member receives a RM500 monthly allocation to conduct youth-oriented programmes, while the state has allocated RM5,000 for each zone to conduct larger activities.

Najwan also cautioned these newly appointed PeBS members not to misuse their allocation and to conduct themselves with integrity.

“Please do not misuse your allocation. Each programme must come with proper documentation and paperwork so that proper due diligence can be carried out,’’ he said.
