Azza Fahmi behaved oddly before death, said sister of slain cop

TAPAH, May 17 — Two weeks before his tragic death, Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, one of the policemen who perished in the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor early this morning, had been frequently sharing thoughts about death with his family.

The victim’s eldest sister, Nur Azza Assyaqiren Azhar, 29, said her 22-year-old brother showed unusual behaviour as he frequently sent messages about death in their family’s WhatsApp group chat.

“I did find it strange, but I never thought he would leave us and did not expect this to happen,” she told the press at her home in Kampung Poh Tambahan, Bidor, today.

Azza Assyaqiren said her brother, affectionately called Ami, was passionate about pursuing a career in the police force to make their parents proud.

She described her brother as friendly and had a good relationship with the family and villagers, adding that he would never fail to provide monthly allowances for their parents and younger siblings.

Another sister, Azza Asyariena Azhar, 27, said her brother wanted to take the family to their father’s hometown in Kelantan for a holiday to make up for his absence during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration due to his work obligations.

Azza Fahmi would repeat this plan whenever he made video calls to the family.

She told Bernama that their last time together was during Ramadan.

Azza Asyariena said her brother's remains are expected to be laid to rest at the Kampung Poh Muslim Cemetery in Bidor, Perak, today or early tomorrow morning after the completion of the post-mortem process.

In the 2.45am incident, a man believed to be a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah group attacked the police station, killing the victim and his colleague, while another sustained severe injuries. The suspect was subsequently shot to death.
