KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered that for every tree felled, 100 more must be planted.
Anwar said on X that he gave the instruction to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.
“I have given the order to the mayor that for every tree that has to be cut down, 100 more must be planted,” he said.
Anwar was responding to media reports quoting Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa about the Kuala Lumpur City Council’s (DBKL) moves after recent tree toppling incidents in the country.
Dr Zaliha said DBKL was ordered to take immediate action to cut down high-risk trees after those incidents.
Dr Zaliha also said DBKL was instructed to improve its Shade Tree Management Plan and prepare new guidelines for aged or high-risk trees, which are expected to be ready in July, to ensure the incidents do not recur.
