SEPANG, April 14 — The police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who shot and seriously injured a bodyguard at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said CID personnel in neighbouring states have been roped in for the operation, which will cover Malaysia's border areas.
He urged the 38-year-old to turn himself in.
“I advise the suspect to cooperate and surrender at any police station. Police have identified the suspect, who is dangerous and armed.
“Therefore, anyone who comes across the suspect should share the information (alert police) and should not act on their own,” he said during a press conference after inspecting KLIA 1.
Shuhaily added that the suspect did not have a firearms license.
In the 1.20am incident, the man fired two shots at his wife at the entrance of the arrival hall but missed, with one of the shots hitting one of her two bodyguards.
The suspect fled in a car parked at Level Two of Block C.
Shuhaily said the police view the incident seriously as KLIA 1 is a major gateway into the country.
"My presence here is a testament to that. This is not the first incident; security measures will be reviewed,” he said.
However, Shuhaily also advised the public not to be unduly worried over security at KLIA 1, as the shooting was an isolated incident sparked by a personal dispute.
In Sungai Petani, Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said security forces have tightened checks at the border with Thailand to prevent the suspect from slipping out of the country.
All police units, as well as the General Operations Force and the Malaysian Armed Forces, have been alerted.
"The Kedah police contingent will give their full support (in the manhunt) by extending any information we may obtain on the suspect. Roadblocks have been set up in the border areas," he said.
Fisol was speaking to the press after witnessing the handover of duties as Kuala Muda police chief from ACP Zaidy Che Hassan to ACP Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail at the district police headquarters today.
