Erdogan urges ‘countries with conscience’ to continue supporting UNRWA

DUBAI, Feb 14 — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called upon all "conscientious" nations to rally behind the UN Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) which he hailed as a vital support for millions of refugees across Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.

Addressing the World Governments Summit (WGS 2024) here Tuesday, Erdogan expressed concern over mounting criticism directed at UNRWA, particularly following allegations implicating some of its staff in the recent attack in Gaza.

While UNRWA has launched an investigation into the claims, funding cuts from several nations risk exacerbating a humanitarian crisis, he said.

Erdogan emphasised the importance of addressing the root causes of the Gaza conflict, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He urged Israel to halt its policies and acknowledge the rights of Palestinians to statehood for lasting peace in the region.

During his visit to the UAE for the summit, Erdogan reiterated Turkiye’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, condemning Israel's actions in Gaza and promising solidarity with the Palestinian people, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.

The summit, themed ‘Shaping Future Governments’, convenes global leaders and stakeholders to discuss pressing issues facing the international community.
