SHAH ALAM, Jan 5 — Residents of Selangor were able to save an accumulated RM18.1 million last year through the state's affordable sales programme, thanks to government subsidies.
Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) chief executive officer Mohamad Khairil Mohamad Razi said the Jualan Ehsan Rahmah (JER) also managed to record RM30.8 million in sales throughout 2023.
The programme was held in over 1,000 locations statewide last year.
"With RM18.1 million spent on subsidies, the state government was able to offer basic necessities at 30 per cent below market prices," he told Selangorkini.
"Overall, we can consider the organisation of JER last year a success, thanks to the excellent collaboration with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
"God willing, we will continue the initiative this year."
Previously in October, state executive councillor for agriculture Izham Hashim, who is in charge of overseeing the implementation of JER, had said that the state government has agreed to allocate RM10 million to see the continuation of the programme this year.
He said the initiative would also be improved, including adding more food items like vegetables and fruits to the list of goods sold.
The programme offers, among other things, standard chickens at RM10 each, fresh solid beef (RM10 per pack), Grade B chicken eggs (RM10 per tray), mackerel fish (RM6 per pack), 5kg cooking oil (RM25), and 5kg rice (RM13).
PKPS senior marketing manager Md Fazir Abdul Latif had said earlier this week that JER, which is taking a temporary break and set to return on January 15, will be organised in more than 1,800 locations across the state this year.
