SHAH ALAM, Dec 7 — An investigation is currently underway after a pornographic novel was found to have been sold at the ongoing Selangor International Book Fair (SIBF) 2023.
Its director Zafrullah Aris said the probe is being conducted by the Home Ministry after a report on the matter was lodged.
This follows viral social media posts on the book’s sale, which had purportedly attracted long lines, mostly youths.
“Referring to viral posts that a pornographic novel is being sold openly, a report has been lodged, action taken, and probe initiated by the Home Ministry,” he said in a statement today.
SIBF’s organisers are cooperating with the Home Ministry in conducting periodic checks on the contents of books being exhibited.
They have also taken various measures to ensure only books suitable for public consumption are sold.
However, this was supposedly ignored by the publisher and writer of the pornographic novel.
“Briefing and reminders to all of those involved in SIBF 2023 are constantly conducted, either before or during the fair.
“The offering and choosing of quality reading materials is a joint responsibility to ensure a reading culture which meets the National Reading Decade initiative’s objective.
“Publishers, authors, creators, illustrators, and everyone involved in the book industry play a role in producing and providing quality reading materials. Parents also have the responsibility to ensure appropriate reading materials are chosen for their children’s development,” Zafrullah said.
SIBF 2023 is being held at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Convention Centre from 9am to 9pm, running from December 1 to December 10.
Organised by the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS), it is a continuation of the smaller-scale Selangor Book Fair, which debuted in 2006 before being upgraded to the SIBF last year.
