Selangor Sports Championship stage for athlete development, unearthing talent throughout district

KAJANG, Nov 19 — The Selangor Sports Championship (Sukses) which is held biennially, is the main driver for the state's sports development process.

State executive councillor for youth and sports Najwan Halimi said the sports games involving all the districts help the development of young athletes to a higher level as well as unearthing hidden talents especially in rural areas.

"Sukses is the best field for young athletes to test their abilities. This talent should be guided, honed and educated with all expertise in order to achieve proud excellence.

"Among the national athletes born from this sport is Farah Ann (Abdul Hadi), who is the queen of gymnastics and bowler Natasha Roslan, who has just been crowned world champion," he said at a press conference after the closing ceremony of the 14th Sukses at Bangi Golf Club, here.

Selangor State Sports Council executive director Nizam Marjugi was also present at the event.

Meanwhile, when reading the Menteri Besar's speech, Najwan hoped that all local authorities could give the state's athletes the opportunity to use the facilities during training.

Sukses which took place from November 7 saw Petaling crowned the overall champion after collecting 76 medals including 33 gold.

The district's cyclists, Khow Yong Peat and Yong Ann Yi were selected as the event’s best sportsman and sportswoman.

For the overall event, Sepang was in second place while Hulu Langat as the host took third place.

Sukses involved 1,178 athletes bidding for 377 medals through 109 events including athletics, pencak silat, field bowling, table tennis, petanque, sepak takraw and cycling.
