SHAH ALAM, Nov 17 — The Hulu Langat district Public Works Department (JKR) is implementing Malaysia's first 'glow-in-the-dark' road project along Jalan Sungai Lalang (B19).

Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan said the project came about as an effort to enhance safer nighttime driving with the aid of light reflection on road dividers.

The technology produces light reflection from vehicle headlights, an innovation in road engineering.

"By retaining the yellow light reflection characteristic using High-Intensity Prismatic Sheet, the lighting method is improved with phosphorescence, also known as 'glow-in-the-dark' technology, which contains phosphors pigments to emit visible light after being energised.

"The energy source can be either sunlight or vehicle lights that are absorbed before it re-illuminates and becomes visible at night," he said in a Facebook post.

Earlier on Wednesday (November 15), Sany accompanied Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi on his visit to the project site.

Sany also expressed thanks for choosing Hulu Langat as the location for the pilot project.

The road painted with this technology will emit light as vehicles pass through dark areas at night. In the day, it appears normal, and the technology aids road users who are not accustomed to driving on new roads or unfamiliar areas.
