SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 — Selangor’s target of fully settling its remaining debts with the Federal government by next year has been described as a courageous move reflecting the state government’s ability to manage its coffers well.

Pakatan Harapan’s Batu Tiga state assemblyman Danial Al-Rashid Haron said it is thanks to Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and his line-up of state executive councillors that Selangor’s debt liability could shrink to just RM19.2 million today.

“This achievement further strengthens the state’s financial position, allowing more of its revenue to be spent on people-centric developments and projects.

“The 2024 Selangor Budget reflects our success and marks a historic milestone for the state,” he said when contacted.

During the budget tabling on Friday (November 10), Amirudin said Selangor is on track to fully repay its financial obligations to the Federal government by 2024 based on its excellent financial track record.

He said the RM19.2 million remaining debt comprises RM1.89 million under the Selangor State Trust Scheme and RM17.31 million in past loans for the state’s water supply project.

However, Amirudin said the latter’s commitment will be transferred to Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd, in line with the Global Settlement Agreement for Selangor’s water industry restructuring.
