Women's hockey squad finishes fifth in Asian Champions Trophy

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — The national women’s hockey squad finished fifth in the 2023 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy after beating Thailand 1 - 0 in the fifth-sixth classification match at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Stadium in Ranchi, India today.

The deciding solitary goal came way early in the match through a penalty corner by Nurmaizatul Hanim Syafi Sheikh Fuad in the first minute, gifting the Speedy Tigress their second win in the championship.

"Alhamdulillah, we got our second victory with the win against Thailand and clinched fifth place. But I felt we could have done better as we had many opportunities through penalty corners.

"Once we are back in Malaysia, there is a lot for us to do, as we know this championship was not easy. We need to focus on rehabilitating injured players and then on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifiers,” head coach Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim said in an audio recording shared with the media after the match.

Malaysia lost three round-robin matches to defending champions Japan 0 - 3, India (0 - 5) and China (0 - 4), drew 1 - 1 against South Korea and carved out their first win against Thailand (2 - 0).
