SUhakam lauds government move in addressing forced labour issue

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 — The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commended the government’s progressive move by releasing a long-awaited ‘Report of the Independent Committee on the Management of Foreign Workers’ after it was completed in 2019.

Suhakam in a statement said with the release of the independent report, the commission reiterates its call on the government to expedite the implementation of the recommendations which include issues of unethical, unhealthy, and unfair practices in the recruitment of foreign workers.

“...and to comprehensively reform relevant policies relating to recruitment, employment and monitoring of foreign workers in Malaysia,” the statement said.

The commission also called on the government to expedite the development of Malaysia's National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR), emphasising the importance of business entities respecting human rights.

“The NAPBHR should be guided by the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP BHR), reflecting a commitment to accountability in business practices, benefiting both people and the planet.

Suhakam remains dedicated to upholding human rights and supporting initiatives contributing to a just and ethical society. We look forward to continued collaboration with the government and other stakeholders in addressing these important issues,” it said.
