Thailand welcomes Myanmar's clemency for Suu Kyi

BANGKOK, Aug 2 — Thailand has welcomed the Myanmar junta’s move in granting state clemency to incarcerated leader Aung San Suu Kyi, noting it is a positive development for the country.

The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Kanchana Patarachoke, said Thailand hopes the granting of clemency will help create a conducive atmosphere for political dialogue in Myanmar.

“Thailand’s wish is to see all parties concerned in Myanmar engaged in an inclusive process to find a peaceful political solution that would help bring sustainable peace and stability to Myanmar,” she said in a statement.

On Monday (July 31), the media reported that Myanmar’s ruling military granted state clemency to Aung San Suu Kyi on five of the 19 offences for which she was convicted.

However, the former leader of the National League for Democracy Party will remain under house arrest, a source who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue reportedly told Reuters.

The 78-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi has been incarcerated since the February 2021 coup. She was moved to house arrest from prison in the capital Naypyitaw, last week.

Former President Win Myint was also granted clemency.

The junta's State Administration Council reduced the jail term of Win Myint by four years, according to Reuters. Win Myint was arrested at the same time as Suu Kyi.
