SHAH ALAM, July 18 — Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI has become the first state agency to join the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Malaysia and Brunei.

Its chief executive officer Norita Mohd Sidek said MBI's participation, which came into effect on May 29, is aligned with MBI's strategic business plan and the 10 UNGC principles, including human rights, the environment, and anti-corruption.

UNGC will collaborate with MBI's subsidiary MBI Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd to develop the Selangor Maritime Gateway, based on environmental, social, and governance practices.

"In this manner, MBI will be able to leverage the guidance and expertise offered, as well as develop better guidelines and reporting on environmental sustainability initiatives.

"Furthermore, it will also create social progress and good governance, in line with the UN's vision," she said in a statement today.

Norita added that MBI also aims to enhance its commitment by promoting sustainable business practices among all its subsidiary companies in the long term.

The replica membership presentation ceremony was witnessed by Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad on June 13.

The UNGC is a global initiative that promotes responsible business practices and advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the participation of over 20,000 companies in 160 countries.
