Cambodia to bar politicians who don't vote from running in election

PHNOM PENH, June 13 — Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Tuesday that the kingdom will amend its election law to ban any politicians who do not vote from standing for elections.

Hun Sen said in a speech during a get-together with nearly 20,000 garment factory workers in the Cambodian capital that if politicians do not cast their ballots on the general election day, they would have no right to stand for any level of election, reported Xinhua.

He said it is common people's right to decide whether to go to polls, but for politicians, they must vote, or their right to stand as a candidate in any elections will be revoked.

Cambodia is scheduled to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023, the National Election Committee (NEC) said, adding that more than 9.7 million Cambodians have registered to cast their ballots.
