KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Reigning men’s doubles world champions, Aaron Chia - Soh Wooi Yik are one step away from reaching their second final spot this year after cruising into the semi-finals of the Singapore Open 2023, earlier today.
In the quarter-final action held in Singapore Indoor Stadium, the national top duo gave a tit for tat to Leo Rolly Carnando - Daniel Marthin by winning 18 - 21, 21 - 16, 22 - 20, after the Indonesians stopped them in the last eight of Malaysia Masters 2023 in 21 - 18, 21 - 19 last month.
Chia - Soh will determine the final spot by going up against the seventh seeds Liang Wei Keng - Wang Chang of China tomorrow.
The Chinese pair had earlier overcome unseeded English duo Ben Lane - Sean Vendy 21 - 11, 21 - 11.
In January, the world number four Chia - Soh stormed into the India Open 2023 final before succumbing to Liang - Wang 21 - 14, 19 - 21, 18 - 21.
It was the end of the road for independent men’s doubles duo Ong Yew Sin - Teo Ee Yi, as they squandered a first-game win of 22 - 20 and lost to South Korea’s Choi Sol Gyu - Kim Won Ho 24 - 26, 22 - 24 in the next two games.
Meanwhile, national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie - Toh Ee Wei made it to the semi-finals, after subduing Reginald Lee Chun Hei - Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong 21 - 14, 16 - 21, 21 - 18.
A tough match awaits the unseeded Chen - Toh tomorrow, as they will meet second seeds Yuta Watanabe - Arisa Higashino of Japan, who knocked out Chinese pair Feng Yan Zhe - Huang Dong Ping 23 - 21, 12 - 21, 21 - 17.
