SEPANG, Feb 16 — The construction of the Sungai Semenyih retention pond (Pond C) in Jenderam Hilir is expected to benefit some 1.2 million users once it begins operating in October.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the reservoir, under the Skim Jaminan Air Mentah (SJAM) initiative, can last for up to five days in the event of a water supply disruption to areas.

"Usually the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) receives water directly from the river, but the retention pond will serve as a backup in the event of any pollution in the river.

"When pollution occurs, we will detect it and the river water from entering the WTP, switching to the pond instead which can last up to five days," he said.

Izham was speaking to the press during his field visit to survey the progress of Pond C's construction, at Jenderam Hilir earlier today.

Also in attendance was Selangor State Government Deputy Secretary (Development) Dato' Johary Anuar.

Izham added that Sungai Semenyih's retention pond holds approximately 12 per cent of the state's entire water supply, encompassing the areas of Putrajaya, Puchong, and Petaling Jaya.

The RM85 million project is now at 54 per cent completion.

SJAM is a state government initiative to address the issue of water supply disruption caused by pollution of raw water sources, especially in Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat.
