SHAH ALAM, Dec 13 — The state government is looking to form 2,100 WiFi access centres throughout Selangor by next year, to ensure people in rural areas will not be marginalised from technological progress.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the initiative will be carried out with a RM5.93 million allocation.

“Even though the Smart Selangor WiFi programme was introduced in 2015, the digital gap between people in urban and rural areas is still apparent.

“Therefore, via the 2023 Selangor Budget, some 2,100 access centres will be set up with a total allocation of RM5.93 million, so people in rural and village areas can be part of the technological advancements,” he said in a Facebook post.

In the budget, Amirudin said approximately 373 traditional villages will receive WiFi service next year as part of the state government’s effort to narrow the digital gap.

The special free WiFi initiative aims to expand the Internet network in rural areas, targeting community halls, mosques and suraus.
