Council homes only for rent, says KL mayor

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — Council Homes built on the initiative of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) are only for rent and not for sale.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said each unit with a minimum area of 750 square feet serves as a transit home for city folks before they can afford to buy their first house.

He said that eligible applicants would be offered to rent the units for a certain period, with a monthly rental rate lower than the market price.

“We set three years for rental before we reassess their eligibility based on their current income.

“This transit period is reasonable to give them enough time to obtain a housing loan from a banking institution to purchase their first home,” Mahadi told reporters after presenting the rental offer letters for Residensi Sungai Udang, Segambut, here today.

To date, a total of 3,621 Council Home units have been and are being built at four DBKL-owned sites around the Federal capital, namely in Bandar Tun Razak, Bandar Baru Sentul and Taman Desa Segambut.

Meanwhile, he said DBKL received over 800 applications for the Residensi Sungai Udang, but only 280 applicants were eligible to rent.
