GE15: Shah Alam candidate determines to champion environmental issue

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, Nov 11 — Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Shah Alam parliamentary seat in the ongoing 15th general election (GE15) is determined to champion environmental issues, should he be given the mandate.

Azli Yusof said this is aligned with Harapan’s offer to ensure climate change issues will be properly addressed for the sake of future generations.

“I am aware of complaints from (the NGO) Rimba Komuniti Shah Alam, who has been pushing the state government to retain and gazette the forest as a reserved forest. I endorsed the matter.

“Forests in Shah Alam must be protected for their ecological, educational, health and recreational importance, and for the sake of locals.

InsyaAllah, this will be among my concerns because the forest acts as the earth’s lung, therefore it must be preserved,” he told SelangorKini yesterday.

Azli was speaking after participating in the hiking programme at the Shah Alam Community Forest (SAFC) in Setia Alam.

He was accompanied by Kota Anggerik state assemblyman Najwan Halimi during the hike.

Meanwhile, SAFC secretary Alicia Teoh said she hopes the new government will pay serious attention to environmental issues.

“Thank you to the Harapan Shah Alam candidate for accepting our invitation to join the programme, even though he is busy with his campaign trail.

“We support Harapan’s offer to preserve nature including to amend the Climate Change Act and hopefully it will pass through,” she said.
