SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — The Selangor Volunteer (Serve) Rescue members will be among the first people to help and save disaster victims while waiting for the arrival of authorities, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the team consists of 37 individuals who underwent five days of training with the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to equip themselves with the necessary basic rescue skills.
“This group was trained with many skills, including water rescue methods, ways to face challenging situations and handling boats. However, in real situations, everyone should await instructions from the authorities.
“The training does not end here. We have long-term plans with the Fire department, either monthly or periodically. The objective is to improve the skills of the members,” said Amirudin during the closing ceremony of the Serve Rescue training course earlier today.
He added that group training will continue from time to time, so more individuals in the Selangor are equipped with rescue skills.
“Authorities also need skilled human resources to help during disasters, and this team is both capable and ready to do so.
“At times, help can become a burden for the authorities if they are untrained and unskilled. So, we want to avoid that,” said Amirudin.
Serve Rescue, previously known as Serve Elite, underwent a basic training course which included learning how to work with the Water Rescue Team to handle flood victims.
The state government has provided RM100,000 in funds to establish the team.
