UN Security Council condemns killing of Al-Jazeera journalist in West Bank

NEW YORK, May 14 — The United Nations (UN) Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the killing of Al-Jazeera's Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and the injury of another journalist in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

In a press statement, the members of the council conveyed their sympathy and deepest condolences to the victim's family, reported Xinhua.

They called for an immediate, thorough, transparent, fair and impartial investigation into her killing, and stressed the need to ensure accountability.

The council members reiterated that journalists should be protected as civilians, stressing that they continued to monitor the situation closely.

Abu Akleh was shot dead on Wednesday while covering an operation by Israeli security forces in Jenin. A fellow journalist was wounded in the same incident.
