KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 — A man who slashed a lawyer on the head and left hand with a machete for rebuking him for not wearing a face mask and was smoking to enter a supermarket was fined RM5,000 for the offence by the Selayang Magistrate’s Court here today.
Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni meted out the fine, in default 11 months’ jail, on M. Samasiveng, 57, who pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt by a dangerous weapon on the lawyer.
He was charged with committing the offence on Gurcharan Singh, 60, at a supermarket in Taman Bersatu Rawang, Gombak here, at 12.45pm last March 9.
The lawyer received 10 stitches on the head and four stitches on the arm for the injury.
The charge was framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for up to 10 years or with a fine or whipping or any two of the punishments if found guilty.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shasha Hidayah Nor Azahar prosecuted, while lawyer T P Aravind represented Samasiveng.
According to the facts of the case, the lawyer and his sister were at the counter of a supermarket to make payment when he rebuked the accused, who was without face mask and was smoking, entering the supermarket.
When the victim was leaving the supermarket, the accused appeared and scolded the lawyer before taking a machete from a car and slashing the victim on the head and left hand. The accused then fled in a car.
