Firefighters rescue anglers trapped in floods at oil palm plantation

DENGKIL, Aug 30 —  Ten individuals who were trapped due to flooding, while on a fishing trip at a mining area in an oil palm plantation at Jalan Kampung Sungai Melut, Dengkil yesterday (August 29),  were rescued by a Fire and Rescue team.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Hafisham Mohd Noor said after receiving an emergency call at 7.28 pm yesterday, a rescue operation was mounted at 7.48 pm and the victims were rescued by around 10.27 pm.

According to him, all the victims, who are locals, including an 11-year-old, were unaware that the water level rose as high as three metres in the vicinity following heavy rain, which caused them to be trapped.

"They panicked when they wanted to leave the area and made the emergency call (to the Fire and Rescue Department) for help,” he told Bernama today, adding that the victims were not from Dengkil and that some of them had come from Cyberjaya.

Hafisham said rescuers managed to bring all the trapped victims out via an alternative route and brought them to a control post before handing them over to the police.

One of the victims, Zairul Nizam Shaari, who made the emergency call, said they were at the mining area since 6 am in separate groups to fish.

“It began raining heavily for three or four hours since 7 am and the water rose quickly. We all looked for high ground to save ourselves. We were stuck in the oil palm plantation till the rescuers arrived,” he said, adding that it was the first time he had fished there.

He said the flood could have been caused by rain water that collected in the mine.
