Report: Glove manufacturers in Selangor halt operations due to EMCO

SHAH ALAM, July 7 — Major glove manufacturers in Selangor are temporarily halting their operations following the enforcement of the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) in several districts in the state, The Edge reported today.

Among the companies include the world’s largest glove manufacturer, Top Glove Corp Bhd. The company has suspended the operation of their medical glove factories in Klang aligned with the EMCO directives.

Top Glove said currently, they are waiting for clarification from the National Security Council on the matter.

“The company looks forward to safely resuming operations at the appropriate time and continuing to produce its much needed medical gloves for frontliners and healthcare workers in Malaysia and globally.

“The company continues to maintain strict adherence to the relevant rules and regulations, as well as Covid preventive standard operating procedures, and is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of its workforce and the communities in which it operates," said Top Glove as quoted by the report.

Meanwhile, Hartalega Holdings Bhd said the company has shut down its factories in Bestari Jaya and Sepang.

"Regrettably, this will have a significant impact on both the local and international healthcare value chain in terms of disruption to the availability of supply, as Hartalega is a key manufacturer of nitrile gloves for hospitals globally," Hartalega said in a written reply to The Edge.

In a related development, Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd said the company has already halted its operations in Klang also due to the EMCO.

Other glove manufacturers operating in Klang include Supermax Corp Bhd and Mah Sing Group Bhd.

The decision made by the companies were deemed as a surprise to some analysts as rubber gloves are categorised as essential personal protective equipment.
