Covid-19: Penang mulls cut for executive council members, assemblymen

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 19 — The Penang government is mulling the possibility of a pay cut for its state executive council members and assemblymen to address the ongoing challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government had implemented a similar measure in April when councillors donated their April salary to the state Covid-19 fund.

In fact, he said all assemblymen, including those from opposition parties, also contributed 30 per cent of their salary to the fund to ease the burden of those impacted by the pandemic.

"We are ready to consider this recommendation (pay cut to ease the burden of the state government)," he told reporters at a press conference today.

Chow said Penang was one of the first states to make the move (pay cut)  to contribute to its Covid-19 fund, followed by other states.

He said through the contributions to the Covid-19 fund, various assistance could be distributed to help those affected including purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontliners.
