Thai Customs seize RM2.2 mln worth of contraband cigarettes from Malaysia

SONGKHLA, Sept 27 — Thai Customs seized 200,000 cigarette packs of various brands worth RM2.2 million believed to have been smuggled in from Malaysia during an operation here on Thursday.

Songkhla province Customs Investigations and Prevention chief Apinin Shinnawong said the department came across a suspicious-looking trailer at the Ban Prakob border in Na Thawi here and after an inspection, officers found that it was carrying 800 large boxes containing 200,000 packs of cigarettes.

"The cigarettes are believed to have been smuggled in from Malaysia for the Southern Thai and Bangkok market," he said when contacted yesterday.

Meanwhile, Satorn police station investigating officer, Lt. Kol. Weeranit Maisiri told Bernama that police arrested the trailer driver, a 31-year-old Thai, at a location near where the operation was held.

The suspect has been released on bail, he said.
