High tide: 10 areas in Klang are at high risk

By Zareef Muzammil

KLANG, Sept 18 — Ten areas in Klang are categorised as high risk as the high tide phenomenon is predicted to reach as high as 5.8 metres.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president, Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin said based on similar incidents in 2016 and 2017, his team are worried that this phenomenon would cause the bunds to break.

"However, the Infrastructure Committee meeting today informed us that the existing bunds height is higher than the expected level of high tide," he said after officiating the Malaysian Population and Housing Census program yesterday.

He added that five evacuation centers are ready to be opened in the event of a flood and said enforcement officers and related authorities are on alert to ensure the welfare of the residents is taken care of.

"We have identified the halls that will be used to place the residents, so we have asked residents to be ready if instructed to move and to keep all their important documents in a safe place," he said.

Earlier, MPK deputy enforcement director Sharul Hazri Abdul Majid said his team had stationed officers in the affected areas 24 hours duty with three rotation shifts involving two teams.

The areas identified as at risk are; Kampung Tok Muda, Sungai Pinang Pulau Indah, Pandamaran, Port Klang, Kampung Sungai Serdang, Ban Sementa, Ban Sungai Keramat, Kampung Perempat, Pelabuhan Utara, Telok Gong and Pulau Ketam.
