SHAH ALAM, July 10 — The malaria outbreak reported in Ampang is under control as no new infections have been recorded to date, says state executive councillor Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud.
The State Health, Welfare, Women Empowerment and Family Committee chairman said the prompt action by the Hulu Langat Health District Office in conducting blood tests on 3,017 individuals in the area had curbed the virus from spreading further.
“The public do not have to worry as the health agency has taken the necessary action, which includes eliminating standing water from construction sites.
“Preventive measures against the virus have also been extended to the nearby housing area, including advising against outdoor activities at night time to reduce the risk of infection,” she told SelangorKini today.
Previously, 14 malaria cases were detected in Ampang which had involved 13 foreign workers and one Malaysian citizen.
The infection was traced back to an Indonesian construction worker at the Sungai Besi-Klang highway, who had contracted the virus from his home country.
On June 26, the Health Ministry announced that all of the patients have fully recovered from the virus. The first case of the outbreak was detected on May 20 while the last patient to have been infected was reported on June 12.
