Jais: 15 people allowed to attend ‘akad nikah’ ceremonies in person from June 22

SHAH ALAM, June 18 — Muslim couples in Selangor planning to wed during the recovery conditional movement control order (RCMO) are now allowed to conduct physical solemnisation beginning June 22, says the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais).

Its director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the event can be attended by no more than 15 people, which would consist of seven representatives from the groom’s side and eight from the bride’s side.

This excludes the bride, groom, the wali (custodian), and two witnesses.

“There will no longer be ‘akad nikah’  (solemnisation) ceremonies through video conferencing.

“The attendees of the ceremony must adhere to the standard operating procedure set by Jais,” he said in a statement today.

However, Mohd Shahzihan said the ‘akad nikah’ ceremony can only be held at selected mosques or Islamic Religious District Offices with the permission of the marriage registrar.

He had also reminded assistant marriage registrars to facilitate with easing the marriage application process as well as the ‘akad nikah’ ceremony.

On June 1, Jais had only allowed marriage for Muslim couples during the RMCO to be carried out via video conferencing.

The online ‘akad nikah' was only applicable to couples who have been approved to tie the knot during the conditional MCO period.
