Malaysia has to work towards food self-sufficiency

By Ashwin Kumar

SHAH ALAM, April 5 — The Covid-19 crisis should be taken as a ‘wake up call’ for Malaysia to work on food self-sufficiency and rely less on supplies from other countries, says Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Menteri Besar said he had previously addressed the importance of food security during times of crisis.

"In my previous speech (during the launch of Selangor Cares Package 2.0), I had emphasised that Covid-19 is a wake-up call and that we cannot rely on food products from other countries.

"Malaysia should aim to become food independent," he said on his official Twitter account today.

On April 1, Amirudin said that the agriculture and food production sectors must be taken into account in the key strategic framework, in terms of innovation and current and emerging technologies.

In measures to help farmers, the state government had launched the Selangor Agro Market programme that aims to provide fresh produce at an affordable price.
