SUBANG JAYA, March 3 — The Selangor government is mulling the rebranding of animal pounds that are under the purview of the state’s local authorities (PBT) as the Protection and Adoption Centre of Abandoned Animals (Pusat Perlindungan dan Adopsi Haiwan-Haiwan Terbiar).
State Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the move was aimed to change the public's perception on the existing animal pounds as well as to encourage the public to opt for adoption.
"The matter is still at the proposal stage, but we may implement it anytime soon because the rebranding plays an important role.
"Some of the public views towards the existing animal pounds are very negative. Though it is named as an animal pound, it actually serves as an animal shelter because the strays that are caught by the local authorities would be rehabilitated and are well taken care of," said Ng after attending the Selangor Local Authority Animal Control Programme 2020 at the MPSJ Multipurpose Hall, here yesterday.
Also present were Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) president Noraini Roslan, the state’s local government section principle assistant director, Mohd Reizal Sumairi, and veterinary consultant from the United Kingdom Dr Brian Faulkner.
The programme, which was presented by Dr Brian, had involved the participation of 12 local authorities on the proper and cautious methods of handling stray dogs.
Among the topics highlighted included the understanding of dog's behaviour, body language, safety and strategic way of catching, zoonosis (transmittable disease from animals to humans) and selection of equipment used in catching strays.
