PETALING JAYA, Feb 11 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has issued a total of 38,058 notices on the 20 sen charge per plastic bag since December last year, as part of its awareness efforts against plastic bag use.

PJ mayor Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the move would prompt shop operators to not give out free plastic bags to shoppers, which would then lessen its usage.

“Widespread and unlimited use of plastic bags would contribute to the production of plastic waste, especially in the commercial sector.

“RM8.6 million was spent by the city council last year on waste disposal,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The Selangor government had approved the implementation of the collection of plastic bag charges through the local authorities (PBT) beginning January 1, 2020.

The funds would be channelled to the state Trust Fund and would be used for environmental programmes.

Businesses that are registered under the plastic bag charge collection programme can collect the form from respective PBTs.

Operators are required to clearly display the registration number and certificate on their premises.
