SHAH ALAM, Jan 17 — The Selangor state government has initiated an operation dubbed as "Op Sumber Air" in an effort to curb river pollution during the festive season.
State Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the 14-day operation, starting from January 17, would focus on keeping the raw water source from being polluted as it could lead to water supply disruption.
“We will monitor the Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat water catchment areas as the two raw water source contribute 90 per cent of the water supply in Selangor,” he told a press conference at the state's operation and meeting centre here today.
Hee added the operation is headed by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) and assisted by 200 personnel from 10 relevant agencies.
Meanwhile, he also pointed out that the Indah Water Consortium will continuously monitor the main water treatment plants in the Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat catchment areas.

On December 21 last year, the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant was forced to shut down completely due to odour pollution, which caused 366 areas with 328,957 consumer accounts in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang to have faced unscheduled water supply disruption following the pollution.
