MUSCAT - Palestinian Ambassador to Oman Tayseer Farhat described on Wednesday the decision by Oman to open an embassy in Palestine as "historical.", reported Xinhua News Agency.

"This is an important step with deep meanings especially at this particular time, because the Palestinian issue is passing through a critical stage in light of what is happening in the region," Farhat told Xinhua in an interview.

He stressed that it is important to hold the Palestinian people and their leadership to insist on their legitimate rights and the Oman's move represents political and moral support to Palestine.

Oman announced its decision on Wednesday to open an embassy in Palestine.

An official statement issued by Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the decision is a continuation of Oman's supportive approach to the Palestinian people.

Oman will send a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Ramallah to start the procedures of opening the embassy, it added.

The Palestinian ambassador stressed that the position by Oman is not the first, as the country always stands next to Palestine and the Palestinian issue.

"We hope to see embassies of all the Arab countries in Palestine because this is a reflection of the fact that there is a Palestinian state recognised by countries around the world," Farhat said.

He added that there are now dozens of embassies in Palestine.
